Ductwork Venting Components Glossary
A ductwork system includes ducts, fittings, plenums, dampers, diffusers, and registers. These components work together to distribute heated or cooled air from the air handler throughout a building.
A diffuser distributes conditioned air evenly in multiple directions, a grille allows air to flow through without control, and a register includes an adjustable damper for controlling airflow direction and volume.
An air handler unit contains a blower, heating and cooling coils, filters, and dampers. It moves conditioned air through the duct system and is typically connected to both supply and return plenums.
Dampers control airflow within duct systems. They balance air distribution, improve comfort, and reduce energy waste. Types include manual dampers, automatic dampers, butterfly dampers, and bypass dampers.
A plenum is a central air distribution box. The supply plenum sends conditioned air from the HVAC unit into the ducts, while the return plenum brings air back to the unit for reconditioning.
Duct fittings—such as reducers, elbows, tees, and wyes—connect different duct sections and manage changes in direction, size, or airflow volume to maintain efficiency and pressure balance.
Flexible ducts (flex ducts) are lightweight, insulated, and easier to install in tight spaces, while sheet metal ducts are more durable and typically used in main trunk lines for larger systems.
A draft hood ensures consistent airflow through a chimney or vent, preventing backdrafts. Vent caps protect vent openings from debris, rain, pests, and backflow while maintaining proper ventilation.
Register boots connect duct runs to floor, wall, or ceiling vents and deliver conditioned air into a room. Angle or end boots are shaped to fit specific installation layouts and ensure efficient airflow.
Duct liners, flexible blankets, and insulated pipe sleeves are used to reduce noise, prevent heat loss, and improve energy efficiency. Common materials include fiberglass and reinforced foil or PVC coverings.
Roof flashings seal around vent pipes to keep water out, while vent pipes allow safe exhaust of combustion gases from furnaces, water heaters, and other appliances.
